Plymouth Astronomical Society

The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into force on 25th May 2018 and are designed to give individuals more control over how their data are used and to ensure that organisations protect personal data better.

Although the Plymouth Astronomical Society (PAS) holds very little information about its members (member name, address, telephone number, email) it is nevertheless subject to the new regulations.

The Federation of Astronomical Societies (FAS) has produced a set of guidelines for the use of individual astronomy societies and the PAS Committee has met to consider how best to implement the new regulations.

In short, we propose to adopt a ‘common sense’ approach, as advocated by the FAS, and to continue to hold in a secure fashion the data we currently hold for each member.  At any time a member can request to see, or to update, the information held and in any case will have the opportunity to do so each September when taking out or renewing membership.

Any data of a temporary nature, for example names of guests, will be destroyed at the earliest appropriate time.

If you wish to discuss the above, or the GDPR more generally, then please contact any committee member.
